Know the ant fauna of the Indian Institute of Science Campus

  • All ants are social and belong to the order Hymenoptera, and family Formicidae
  • Currently there are about 12,630 extant ant species and 297 genera in the family Formicidae(www.antbase.org-dated 16/05/11)
  • There are 21 subfamilies in the family Formicidae (Bolton, 2003, Rabeling et al., 2008)
  • 633 species of ants belonging to 82 genera, 13 subfamilies are reported from India (Varghese, 2009)
  • 226 species of ants belonging to 63 genera and 11 subfamilies are estimated from Karnataka state (Varghese, unpublished)

This site provides a procedure, which facilitates the identification of few common genera of ants present on the I.I.Sc. Campus. The first step is to distinguish ants from Spiders (some spiders closely resemble and mimic ants) and the next step is to distinguish ants from other insects (Some bugs, beetles, and mantids etc also resemble and mimic some ants); and the third step is to distinguish ants from other Hymenopterans.
