R.C. Dutt (Romesh Chunder Dutt 1848-1909) packed in one lifetime at least five distinguished careers - civil servant, economic historian, outstanding novelist in Bangla, translator of Sanskrit classics into English, Professor of Indian history and culture at London University and financial advisor to Sayajirao Gaekwad of Baroda. He was also the President of Indian National Congress and a relentless critic of British taxation and famine control policies. This paper attempts an assessment of this man, setting him against the background of colonial history and focusing on his imaginative construction of India as a nation.

Screening of excerpts of rare silents from the Indian film. Out of approximately 1300 Indian films made in the silent era (between 1912-1931) only about 10 hours of silent cinema survives. This talk describes the history of the period along with clips from silent films.
