R.C. Dutt (Romesh Chunder Dutt 1848-1909) packed in one lifetime
at least five distinguished careers - civil servant, economic historian,
outstanding novelist in Bangla, translator of Sanskrit classics into
English, Professor of Indian history and culture at London University
and financial advisor to Sayajirao Gaekwad of Baroda. He was also
the President of Indian National Congress and a relentless critic
of British taxation and famine control policies. This paper attempts
an assessment of this man, setting him against the background of colonial
history and focusing on his imaginative construction of India as a
nation. |
