Position available: Crop Assessment Analyst
Remote Sensing/GIS Agricultural Analyst Position
Position Located in Washington , DC . - Requires US Citizenship

An Unofficial Description of the Position:
An interesting semi-analytical/technical position is currently available
with the Foreign Agricultural Service working as an international and
domestic agriculture commodity forecaster. The position is responsible for
monitoring agricultural areas of the world, performing analysis, and
presenting current season production forecasts. Tools and data used in the
position include imagery data (AVHRR, Landsat TM, SPOT, MODIS), vegetation
indexes, crop models, GIS software (ArcView, ArcGIS), Image Processing s/w
(ERDAS, PCI), agro-meteorological data models, CROP MODELS, web browsers,
web page design s/w, graphic design s/w, spreadsheet s/w, GIS software,
digital image processing, weather station data, climate data, historical
agricultural production data, and assessing validity and impact of
information contained in international news stories. The main crops of
concern are soybeans, canola, wheat, barley, corn, cotton, peanuts, and
sorghum of the major export/import countries.
Words of Wisdom : Make Sure you follow instructions on how to apply as
specified in the announcement. It may at first appear to be overwhelming,
however read it first, the application process is relatively
straightforward and not too painful. Do not be put off by what may appear
on first glance to appear as lots of government job jargon, red tape, and
bureaucratic non-sense. If you have made it this far (in life) then you can
certainly put together the basic application materials. Keep in mind that
this career is well paying, interesting work, which serves the valuable
process of monitoring world food security. There are tools and time to
investigate many different disciplines including crop forecasting using
GIS, remote sensing technology, GPS, field travel, research, database
creation, etc. I recommend applying. I encourage you to apply for this
position even though you may believe you do not have experience in all the
areas. Most helpful in my mind will be: positive attitude, flexibility,
patience, analytical skills, computer skills and then some subset of
experience in field crop agriculture, remote sensing, agronomy, GIS, and
agricultural economics will prove beneficial in performing the work.

APPLY!
Keep in mind the last announcement only had 4 applicants. Those are good
odds.
APPLY!
APPLY SOON AND ACCORDING TO THE DIRECTION PROVIDED IN THE OFFICIAL
ANNOUNCEMENT . Particularly important are answering KSA questions.

Subject: Re: confirmatory versus exploratory research

I would like to recommend a paper on northern spotted owls that discusses
the past history of descriptive research vs. the importance of adding a
paradigm of causal (cause and effect) research. A key sentence: " In other
words, is it not sufficient to know just the patterns and not the mechanisms
behind those patterns? We argue that just observing the patterns continues
to fuel debates over what resources are needed to manage for spotted owls
and why."

Subject: Human Solidarity and Sustainable Development

Hello,

This is to let you know that I just uploaded a working draft of the
paper to the following location:

http://www.pelican-consulting.com/solisust.html

This initial draft is too long, and I know you are busy, but I would be
grateful for any feedback. Ignore the appendices and references. Just
take a look at sections 1 to 8. I am trying to integrate three topics:
patriarchy, solidarity, and sustainability.

The mission for the newsletter is to:

1. Communicate the harm done to humanity (both women and men) by the
patriarchal mindset, specially via religious institutions.

2. Show that solidarity is the one and only path toward sustainability.

3. Show that patriarchy is an obstacle to solidarity, and therefore to
sustainability.

Needless to say, many real scholars have explained the inter-connection
of these topics better than I could ever do it. This is just my attempt
to express these concerns in my own words, based on my experiences (and
biases), now that I have time to do a bit of reading and writing.

If your time permits, kindly send your comments to LTG1963@ecoisp.com

Sincerely,
Luis

On the eve of the American Fisheries Society conference in Madison, I think
t is appropriate to provide this link to a guest editorial in the current ed
tion of Fisheries, ^ÓFish Conservation , Sustainable Fisheries, and Economic
Growth: No More Fish Stories.^Ô

http://steadystate.org/files/Fisheries_Forum_2004_Final.pdf

Ecologists should find it relevant for 3 reasons:

1) It highlights the fallacies of the ^ÓEnvironmental Kuznets Curve^Ô, whic
is used to argue that economic growth is the answer to environmental protec
ion.

2) It reports on TWS's leadership role in addressing the conflict between e
onomic growth and wildlife conservation.

3) It calls on AFS to join TWS and other professional natural resources soc
eties in addressing the conflict.
