OBJECTIVES

Efficient mechanical biological treatment (MBT) systems are one of the
key options of integrated waste management, to achieve viable,
affordable, sustainable management of Municipal Solid Waste in Europe and
fulfil the target of the Landfill Directive as to reduction of landfilled
biodegradable waste.

One of key aspects of MBT is its flexibility, which makes it particularly
effective in those situations where source separation of
recyclable/compostable fractions still has to be fully implemented in
order to reach its highest performances in future years; as a matter of
fact, implementation of strategies for intensive source separation will
arguably imply a future change in quantity and quality of residual waste
to be treated, and flexibility

This workshop considers the role of MBT and results it can deliver,
assessing its role in the treatment of MSW and its perspectives in
Europe, with particular reference to Spain..

The Institute for Sustainability of Resources -ISR

ISR is a private non-profit Foundation of Iberian scope with the goal of
achieving an improvement in environmental quality through monitoring of
pollution, best practices in waste management and rational conservation
of natural resources.

At present the Foundation Board of Patrons is formed by 90 Patrons,
including Worldwide Experts, Iberian Private Companies and Public
Administrations and Bodies.

The Foundation goals are achieved through the organization of activities
like Conferences, Seminars and Congresses, as well as by means of the
dissemination of its publications. The Institute for Sustainability of
Resources, that has a constant relation with Public Administrations and
other European institutions, collaborate in scientific, technical and
economical research works, with the aim to improve environmental quality.

Dialogue with society in general and complicity with the mass media, as
well as a privileged relation with the scientific community, are the
identity hallmarks that make the Foundation an instrument for the
industry and a relevant reference point to achieve a more transparent and
democratic debate on new tendencies.
