THE ECOSYSTEMS CENTER
MARINE BIOLOGICAL LABORATORY

    Five (5) Postdoctoral Scientist positions are available this spring to
work on research at the Plum Island Estuary Long-Term Ecological Research
(LTER) site.  The five research areas are:

1) Estuarine biogeochemistry - To conduct research on nitrogen cycling in
estuaries by using a 15N whole system tracer experiment.  Expertise in
phytoplankton and inorganic and organic N transformations preferred
(reference:  PDS cycling).
2) Estuarine food webs - To determine the processing of  15N tracer added
in a whole system tracer experiment by estuarine organisms.  Expertise in
organismal biology, benthic ecology or fishes preferred (reference:  PDS
cycling).
3) Estuarine microbial ecology - To conduct research on the controls of
microbial food web structure as well as examining the sources and fates of
organic matter.  Expertise in microbial ecology, molecular techniques,
isotope geochemistry and biomarkers is preferred (reference:  PDS PIELTER).
4) Watershed biogeochemistry - To conduct research on nitrogen cycling and
transport in watersheds.  Expertise in riparian, fluvial, hyporheic or
in-stream processing appropriate (reference:  PDS Plum Island).
5) Watershed hydrology - To conduct research to develop and link hydrologic
and nutrient processing models of upland runoff and stream transport.
Expertise in GIS, hydrodynamic modeling and hydrology is desirable
(reference:  PDS Plum Island).

summer.  Winter duties will include laboratory and writing in Woods Hole,

fish.  Experience using stable isotopes in ecological studies is preferred.
 Activities in Woods Hole will include analysis of water chemistry, algae,
and fish samples, data analysis; extensive writing of manuscripts; and
logistical planning.

A full-time temporary Research Assistant I position is available at the
Marine Biological Laboratory.

DUTIES:  Applicants should have a background in terrestrial
biogeochemistry.  This project is examining the fate of meta-stable soil
organic matter with and without the presence of root carbon inputs.
Natural abundance 14C measurements will be used to determine the turnover
times of various soil carbon pools.  The research will involve:  1)
fieldwork at Harvard Forest measuring soil respiration and collecting soil
samples, 2)  laboratory separation of soil samples into various carbon
fractions and 3)  preparation of these C fractions for 14C determination.

EDUCATION/SKILL/EXPERIENCE:  Applicants should have a BS in biology,
chemistry or some laboratory experience in soil chemical analyses are desired.

DURATION OF EMPLOYMENT:  This project is funded for 4 months and will begin
on or about May 1, 1999.  Continuation of employment is dependent on
availability of funds.

One post-doctoral research position is available January 1, 1999 with the
Ecosystems Center of the Marine Biological Laboratory.

DUTIES:  Simulation modeling of vegetation-atmosphere interactions and
biogeochemistry in tropical ecosystems.  The post-doctoral researcher will
conduct studies on a NASA funded project, a component of the LBA experiment
(The Large Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia).  LBA is
designed to create the new knowledge needed to understand the
climatological, ecological, biogeochemical and hydrological functioning of
Amazonia, the impact of land use change on these functions and the
interactions between Amazonia and the Earth system.  The individual will
have responsibility for operating two extant models (one of
vegetation-atmosphere interactions on hourly to annual time-scales, the
other of ecosystem biogeochemistry, on annual to decadal time scales) to
generate regional extrapolations of the dynamics of C and nutrient storage
and exchange.  This will involve interaction with LBA teams involved with
data collection at both intensive study sites and from remote sensing and
with LBA teams modeling other components of the Amazon basin system.  It
will also involved collaboration with our Brazilian colleagues who have
expertise in remote sensing and GIS.

EDUCATION:  A Ph.D. in environmental science or associate subject with
specialization either in biogeochemistry, remote sensing, models of
ecosystem dynamics, or micrometeorology.  Strong quantitative abilities and
facility with computers.  Expertise in GIS (ARC) and/or programming
(FORTRAN/Delphi) a plus.

The Ecosystems Center of the Marine Biological Laboratory is seeking
applicants for one or
two internships on its long term ecological research projects.  These
positions are supported by a special NSF sponsored program called Research
Experience for Undergraduates (REU) and are open only to U.S. citizens or
permanent residents who are undergraduates currently enrolled at U.S.
colleges and universities.

DUTIES:   The successful applicants will participate in field research on
arctic tundra ecosystems, working at the Toolik Field Station in northern
Alaska.  Field collection and measurement of plants and soils, laboratory
sorting and chemical analysis and data analysis are the major tasks.  This
is an educational program in which students will participate in the full
ranges of our field activities and will also select a special individual
research topic.  At the end of the summer, results will be presented to
co-workers in an REU poster session at Toolik Lake.  In the past, some of
these projects have led to additional undergraduate research or theses
following the students' return to their schools.

SKILLS, EDUCATION/EXPEIENCE REQUIRED:   Support as an NSF-REU student is
