ESTABLISHED: 23 January 1995

MISSION: To help identify the agenda and priorities for sustainable development; to develop new areas of consensus on difficult issues of sustainable development, and where this is not possible, to clarify and reduce difference; to provide advice and recommendations on actions to achieve sustainable development; to help evaluate progress towards objectives; and to inform and involve others, building wider support for emerging consensus.

2. UNITED KINGDOM GOVERNMENT PANEL ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

ESTABLISHED: 25 January 1994

MISSION: To advise the government on strategic issues arising from the United Kingdom Strategy for Sustainable Development and the other post-Rio reports published in January 1994 on climate change, biodiversity, and forestry. The panel will be expected to keep in view general sustainability issues at home and abroad, identify major problems or opportunities likely to arise, monitor progress and consider questions of priority.
