ESTABLISHED: 1 October 1992

MISSION: It is the duty of the Council to formulate policies and plans related to environmental conservation and to coordinate environmental programmes. The Council will: a) determine policies for national heritage conservation and management; b) investigate the effectiveness or potential adverse effects of environmental plans, and prepare reports for the public; c) assess the environmental and social impacts of projects likely to have significant effects on the environment in order to adopt required mitigation measures, and closely involve in these assessments the individuals, communities, agencies, or institutions most likely to be affected by such projects; d) coordinate the ministries of His Majesty's Government with regard to environmental issues; e) monitor international efforts towards environmental protection and sustainable development; f) review existing environmental laws and make necessary reforms; g) establish national environmental standards for pollution control and ensure their implementation; h) monitor the status of the environment in order to assess environmental trends and maintain environmental quality and standards; i) implement the National Conservation Strategy with periodic necessary revisions; and j) perform other necessary functions.
