1. NATIONAL STEERING COMMITTEE FOR ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPMENT

ESTABLISHED: n/a

MISSION: The Committee, which includes Ministers responsible for environment and conservation, is undertaking the effort to integrate existing policy objectives into a National Environmental Policy (NEP) that will protect the environment and foster sustainable development.

MEMBERSHIP: n/a

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The Sixth Malaysia Plan (1991-95), the Second Outline Perspective Plan (OPP2) (1991-2000), and the New National Development Policy and Sectoral policies provide the basis for national action. Emerging issues which may require new legislation have been examined by an Environmental Law Review Committee. The MEXCOE group, consisting of Federal and State Ministers responsible for environmental affairs, is chaired by the Prime Minister and meets regularly. The Government promotes the involvement of major groups including NGOs.
