1. CENTRAL ENVIRONMENT COUNCIL

ESTABLISHED: 19 November 1993

MISSION: The Council is part of the Environment Agency, and is responsible for: developing recommendations for the Director General of the Environment Agency with regard to implementation of the Basic Law of Environment Protection and implementation of the Rio package; consulting with the Prime Minister, the Director General of the Environment Agency, and other ministers on matters related to environmental conservation; and performing delegated tasks as specified by other laws and ordinances. The Council submits its opinions to the Prime Minister, the Director General of the Environment Agency, or other ministers concerned.

2. AD HOC GROUP ON GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS

ESTABLISHED: September 1980

MISSION: Organized by an instruction of the Prime Minister, the Committee undertakes the following tasks: assessing the current status and future prospects of global environmental problems and giving a comprehensive judgement; suggesting a basic Japanese policy for global environmental issues; and suggesting an agenda for future actions and discussions on global environmental issues. The Committee forwards its recommendations to the Minister of the Environment Agency.
