MISSION: Iceland's first national environmental strategy, entitled "Towards Sustainable Development", was approved by the Government in February 1993. Subsequently, the Government requested the Minister for the Environment to supervise the development of a comprehensive sustainable development action plan to facilitate the implementation of the strategy. For this purpose, the Minister for the Environment established seven task forces with broad-based participation of representatives from the legislative assembly, the government administration, local authorities, interest groups and non-governmental organizations. The work is under the direction of the Secretary-General of the Ministry for the Environment.
