1. CHINESE SOCIETY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FOR SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT (CSSTSD)

ESTABLISHED: 14 January 1992

MISSION: The CSSTSD seeks to investigate the role that science and technology can play in meeting the social challenges of the upcoming 21st century. Its activities include research, technical training, public education, consulting and international exchanges. The aim is to raise public consciousness on issues that affect the quality of life, as well as to support projects that help to elevate that quality. It seeks ways to harmonize economic and social development with the needs of sustainable population growth, environmental protection and the conservation of natural resources.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The CSSTSD has gathered together many well-known specialists, scholars, administrators and entrepreneurs. Their interests include the demographic, resources-related and environmental aspects of social development. The group has organized into five working commissions and four special commit- tees, all under a General Office. Together they form a network of economists, scientists, engineers, educators, and social scientists. Since Rio UNCED, CSSTSD has been fully involved in: the process of formulating China's Agenda 21 (completed in January 1994); initiating an International Training Centre for Sustainable Development (two training courses have been successfully completed); and promoting and publicizing the implementation of China's Agenda 21, including translating the handbook "Agenda for Change" by Michael Keating from English to Chinese and developing a special reception on World Agenda 21. The society includes: the General Office of the Society; Working Commissions (International Cooperation, Promoting and Publicity, Academy Research, Comprehensive Experimental Communities for Sustainable Development, Organization); and Special Committees (Sustainable Development, Human Settlement, Water Resources, Natural Disaster Reduction and Prevention).

2. THE ADMINISTRATIVE CENTRE FOR CHINA'S AGENDA 21 (ACCA21)

ESTABLISHED: March 1993

MISSION: ACCA21 shall: 1) be responsible for the routine administration of implementing China's Agenda 21; 2) serve as the executing agency of capacity-building projects; 3) provide information and consulting services for the formulation and implementation of sustainable development strategies, policies, and programmes at various levels; 4) facilitate international cooperation, in particular environmentally sound technology transfer; 5) conduct personnel training; and 6) serve as the Secretariat of China Council on Sustainable Development (to be founded).
