Biodiversity Research Group is engaged in theoretical, experimental and field research as well as policy studies.
MICROBIAL DIVERSITY
Approach:
(a) Microbial Diversity investigations involves isolation, identification and classification of soil microbes (microscopy and basic histology).
(b) Geographical Variation : involves examining variation both in the microhabitats and macrohabitats and also correlating it with physical factors as well as the biotic environment (recording, classifying and analysing).
(c) Genetics of diversity : This involves culturing strains and analysing them with a view to quantitating diversity at the enzymatic level (by studying isozyme variation) and at the level of DNA (by looking for restriction fragment length polymorphisms). This will result in arriving at spatial and temporal correlates of genetic diversity.
MOUNTAIN DIVERSITY
Western Ghats and Himalayas constitute the biodiversity richest areas of the country. Investigations on the distribution of biodiversity in these tracts carried out by focussing on a diversity of taxa (soil amoebae, lichens, mosses, wild relatives of cultivated plants, ants, gastropods, vertebrates ...).
BIODIVERSITY POLICY
India is a country of origin of a great deal of potentially valuable genetic resources. It also has substantial capacity for developing indigenous industrial uses of these resources.
Our unit is working closely with the Government of India's Ministry of Environment and Forests in analysing a number of policy issues arising out of India's accession to the Convention on Biological Diversity. Prof. Madhav Gadgil, Chairman of this unit is serving as Government of India nominee to the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice to the Convention.
Documentation Centre of this Unit, already has an excellent collection of documents pertaining to issues of inventorying, monitoring, sustainable use, conservation and benefit sharing.
Unit has organised a series of workshops and training programmes over the last three years.

WWF, the world's largest independent conservation organization, is pleased
to announce the launch of its World Wide Web site, The WWF Global Network.
This site provides comprehensive news and information more than 14,000
screens of it on all aspects of conservation and the environment. Topics
include forests, climate change, marine issues, pollution, species, and
sustainable development.
