The Netherlands

The Alliance for Sustainable Development (ADO) is a federation of 26 environment, solidarity, peace and women's NGOs in the Netherlands. In the preparations for UNCED, another organization was founded, with a broader membership drawn from the independent sector including NGOs, unions, employers, churches, and scientists. This organization, Platform Brazil '92, played a role in the official Dutch inputs during the Rio summit. ADO activities were focussed at the Global Forum but influenced the official process as well. The Alliance and the Platform decided to merge in early 1993.

The Government of the Netherlands produced its second environment policy plan at the end of 1993. While the first plan (published in 1989) concentrated on industry, transport and agriculture, the second plan turned its attention to other areas such as consumers and small and medium-sized businesses.
