In September 1993, Sydney hosted an Aboriginal Culture and Heritage Conference as part of the UN International Year of the World's Indigenous People. It focussed specifically on Aboriginal culture and heritage and the relationship with other environmental law and management issues. It also aimed to encourage the recognition of Aboriginal people as indigenous people of Australia, with a view to achieving culturally appropriate change in government policy, law and systems, focussing on the issue of self-determination.

"Notes from Rio" is a new publication produced by the Victorian State Department of Conservation and Natural Resources in Australia. It explains the preparation of UNCED, its outcomes (as of June 1993) and the possible effects on Australia. It has been sent to all secondary schools in Victoria and most tertiary institutions, to assist the teaching of international policy development and implementation.
