The Centre for Applied Social Sciences of the University of Zimbabwe and IUCN gave a Training Course in Social Sciences Perspectives in Natural Resources Management in the fall of 1994. This course was offered to technical resource managers and specialists from Southern Africa. The major components of the course included: issues in environmental management; institutional arrangements for resource and environmental management; land and resource tenure and resource economics; roles and techniques for resource managers; and field exposure.

A Task Group on the Environment has developed a draft Environmental Policy Framework for the City Planner's Department of Cape Town, South Africa. Stressing the importance of sustainable development, the importance of both the natural and built environment, and the need to improve the quality of life for all, especially the poor, the report establishes guidelines to help the city planners in future development of the city.
