"Down to Earth: Practical Applications of Ecological Economics" is the title of the third meeting of the International Society for Ecological Economics (ISEE) took place in San Jos‚, Costa Rica, from 24-28 October 1994. Among the topics discussed were envisioning sustainable alternatives; social and ethical dimensions of ecological economics; ecosystems, biodiversity and development; sustainable agro-ecosystems; creating the institutional setting for sustainability; international finance of sustainable development; and new perspectives in ecological economics. The conference was organized by the ISEE, the National University, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the Earth Council.

The Intersessional Experts Meeting for the Operationalization of the Economics of Sustainability was held from 28 to 30 July 1994 in Manila. The Philippine Experts Meeting was sponsored by the Philippine Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD) and the Earth Council. It brought together experts on ecological and traditional economics, representatives of various major national groupings (G77, G7, and the economies in transition), representatives of multi-lateral financial institutions and members of civil society, towards the establishment of models for economic development strategies based on sustainability.
