An international roundtable on water and health in underprivileged urban areas was held
in Sophia Antipolis, France, from 21-23 February 1994. At the meeting, nearly 100
representatives of NGOs, developed and developing countries discussed the need for more
responsible use of water resources in the face of mounting health, sanitation and nutrition
problems caused by increasing urbanization and population growth. The recommendations of
the meeting were presented to the second meeting of the CSD in May to tie in with discussions
of chapter 18 of Agenda 21.
