The Ministry of the Environment of Norway convened a symposium on sustainable
consumption in late January 1994 which drew together a number of ministers of environment to
discuss how industrialized countries can find ways and means of moving towards more
sustainable patterns of consumption. A series of presentations covered the issues relevant to
mobilizing changes towards sustainable consumption among governments, the UN system,
industry, research, voluntary organizations and the media. The papers and discussions formed
the background material for a report presented to the CSD in May.
