Wanna twitch?
In UK and some other European countries the news of the sighting of a rare bird brings about frenetic activity in the birding circles. Birdwatchers will travel thousands of kilometers to converge at the spot where the rare bird was seen in the hope of seeing it themselves. In simple terms, they ‘twitch’. ‘Twitching’ today is one of the most popular hobbies in Europe and North America. It has even spawned its own vocabulary – you are a dude if you are on your first twitching trip. To dip out is to miss finding the bird you came to see and to grip off is to find it and boast about it to others who didn’t! Bird watching, in general, is today one of the most popular hobbies world over. All it takes to watch birds, are a keen pair of eyes (and ears), pen and paper, a field guide and a pair of binoculars (apart from lots of patience and willingness to wake up at unearthly hours!).
The Ecology Students’ Society (ESS) is planning to organize bird watching trips within the IISc campus for all interested (as long as you are legally allowed to be on the campus!). Over the years, more than 150 bird species have been recorded from the IISc campus and the list is still growing. These trips will be early in the morning (06:30-8:30 h), in groups of 5-10, in different parts of the campus. Each group will be accompanied by someone who has already done a bit of birding and can help identify the birds. If things go well IISc might have its own clan of twitchers in the near future.
