WORKSHOP ON

FORESTRY & CLIMATE CHANGE-

ASSESSING MITIGATION POTENTIAL: LESSONS LEARNED

Organized by:

Indian Council for Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE)

Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore

Supported by

U. S Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA)

Location: New Delhi: India International Center

Date: Sept 23 & 24, 2002

Workshop Goals: Climate change is one of the most important global environmental problems facing humanity. Forest sector contributes about 20% of 7 Gt C of carbon emissions annually. Forest sector also provides mitigation opportunity to the tune of about 2 Gt C annually. Forest sector has received significant attention in global efforts to mitigate climate change. The discussion on mitigation in forest sector has raised several issues, which are a subject of research, modeling and negotiations. The technical issues are very important and need to be addressed if forest sector has to play a critical role in mitigating climate change. The proposed workshop aims at addressing technical issues in forest sector with a focus on developing countries, particularly India. The workshop also aims to identify key areas of research and capacity development and suggest future collaborative research and information sharing opportunities.

1. Create awareness among different stakeholders on climate change-forest sector mitigation and project opportunities

2. Discuss issues related to the GHG accounting of forest sector projects: permanence, additionality, leakage, verification etc.

3. Discuss methods, tools, and techniques for assessing forest sector mitigation potential, costs

4. Understand the forest sector mitigation potential, costs and benefits in India

  1. Learn from the experience of other developing countries in addressing climate change mitigation in forest sector (India, Indonesia, Philippines etc.)
  2. Discuss afforestation, reforestation, deforestation, additional activities & project activities.
  3. Explore future areas for collaboration on research, forest sector case study development and methods for addressing key GHG accounting issues
